How Yard Card Works: Targeting, Design, and Results
A behind-the-scenes look at how Yard Card selects target homes, designs personalized postcards, and generates 45-50x returns for landscaping companies.
I built Yard Card for a friend who owns a landscaping company. Once the leads started coming in, I realized it was a business.
Here's how it works, and why it's a better investment than "writing blogs" and the other things marketing agencies like to pitch.
Step 1: We find the right houses
None of this works if the postcard goes to the wrong house. Here's how we pick the right ones.
Data we filter on:
- Towns, cities, zip codes
- Home value
- Lot size
- Property type (single-family homes)
- Location: for example, all of the neighbors of your existing clients
Then we look at the actual property:
- Hilly properties (a fit for masonry, retaining walls)
- Existing driveways
- Fence or no fence
- No landscaping
- Nice landscaping already in place
That's how we build the perfect list of targets. In one campaign, for example, we targeted $1M+ single-family homes with lot sizes over 10,000 sq ft in Greenville, SC.
Step 2: We find an image of the actual house
We find this house.
Step 3: We landscape the yard, using your services and expertise
Then, we send this postcard.
Results
Campaign example:
Investment:
- 1,500 postcards
- $4,500 spent
Results:
- 5 new deals in the pipeline
- $205,000 in new pipeline
That's a 45x return.
Another campaign:
Investment:
- 1,000 postcards
- $3,000 spent
Results:
- 3 landscaping projects in the pipeline worth $170,000
That's more than a 50x return, and the campaign was still generating leads.
